Because the dowry is very high in India, 50.000 female fetuses are simply being aborted every month. For this reason the UN has declared the country as the most dangerous place in the world for girls. Daughters are a financial burden for their parents, who have to provide an expensive dowry so that they might someday find a husband. This custom has already caused the ruin of many families: „I need 600.000 Rupees in order to get this daughter here a husband“, says the beekeeper Shiv Kumar from Delhi, „another daughter – and I would be bankrupt.“  According to the latest estimates, there are currently something like 40 million more male than female Indians.

According to traffic engineering expert M.N. Sreehari, there has been an alarming rise in the number of cars. The number of four-wheelers is increasing by 15 per cent every year. This is nearly the same rate of vehicular growth as in the national capital region, Delhi. "This has to be stopped immediately," he says. Two-wheelers are no exception; their number has increased from 9.94 lakh in 2000 to 28.26 lakh in 2011.

Recent Strikes
Transport workers' strike (13. September 2012, no figures about duration or number of participants)

The unlimited strike called on Thursday by the Joint Committee of Karnataka State Road Transport Trade Unions has been showing effects across the State since Wednesday. The unions are opposing the unilateral wage increase announced by the managements of the road transport corporations (RTCs). Transport workers staged gate meetings and abstained from work beginning on Wednesday afternoon, affecting normal operations. Transport corporation officials admitted that over 30 per cent of services in Bangalore were affected. Buses were packed to capacity on Wednesday evening. Meanwhile, the government detained union leaders, in an attempt to thwart the strike. According to committee convener and KSRTC Staff and Workers Federation general secretary H.V. Ananthasubba Rao, 3, 8 and 16 leaders were arrested in Peenya, Tumkur and Maddur, respectively. About 400 more strike organizers were transferred and another 5,000 union members warned by management.

bangalored
You are bangalored when you get fired from your job because it was outsourced to an offshore company. The name derives from the city Bangalore, India, where a lot of IT jobs in the US are being outsourced.

The role of the English language
There is now a new caste system that divides people – either you have English or you don’t. Instead of BPL (Below Poverty Line) I would like to propose BEL (Below English Line) – the new cutoff – it determines wheter you belong to the haves or the have-nots. Vanamala Vishwanatha (2001), Professor for English Studies at Azim Premij University.
